Who Will See My Portfolio?
 

Teen presenting portfolioNow that you have a list of potential ideas for your portfolio, now you must select which items you want to include in your portfolio. Remember, the items you include should reflect who you are and what interests you. You will want to include a range of items from several different areas of your life, displaying the unique person you are.

To determine exactly which items to include in your portfolio, think about who your audience might be. Will you be showing this portfolio to a teacher, a parent, a college admissions representative, or a potential employer? You may decide to show your portfolio to many different people. Complete the following exercise to help determine what your audience might like to see included in your portfolio.

To help you think about who might see your portfolio and how your audience can affect what items you include, answer the following questions for each of the three people listed below:

  1. A College Admissions Officer
  2. A Potential Employer
  3. A Community Representative
  1. What would ________ be looking for in a portfolio? For example, would he/she expect to see examples of academic achievement, community service, or work skills?
  2. Select three items from your list of potential portfolio items that each reviewer might be interested in seeing and list below:

Now that you understand how your audience might affect which items you choose to include in your portfolio, reflect on this activity.

  • What would he or she expect to be included?

Choose the first several items to be included in your portfolio by thinking about what your audience will be looking for.
