Airplane Instruments:

Adapted from Stage 3: Reaching New Heights, pg. 12

  • Airspeed Indicator: registers the speed the airplane is flying

  • Altimeter: shows the airplane's height above sea level.  Set to barometric pressure at departure and by radio in flight.

  • Artificial Horizon: shows the aircraft's position in relation to the earth's horizon

  • Heading Indicator: compass that does not automatically point to magnetic north.  Set manually to the magnetic compass.

  • Turn Coordinator: shows the rate of turn and direction of turn

  • Vertical Velocity Indicator: indicates whether the aircraft is climbing, descending or in level flight
